As a senior at SPHS, Ashley Boardwine now a student at Virginia Tech, wrote a grant for the Green Roof project and was in charge to oversee the project. Team Estonoa received an $18,312.50 grant to construct a lively vegetated green roof on the school’s tractor shed. The grant was made possible through the combined efforts of the Upper Tennessee River Roundtable, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, and the Tennessee Valley Authority.
In the Spring of 2008, Team Estonoa members and many builders started construction on the Green Roof. Team Estonoa members bucketed a tri-mix of peat moss, vermiculite, and top soil on top of the Green Roof. A layer of coconut fiber cloth was added. Members planted succulent, non native plants on top of the Green Roof. Construction and planting on the Green Roof was completed shortly after construction started!
Starting on a hot day in August 2008, St. Paul High School became a little greener!! SPHS faculty, staff and students initiated a school-wide recycling program. New bins were installed in each classroom and work area – then everyone stopped tossing and started RECYCLING!!! Science students have manned this project by collecting paper, cardboard, aluminum AND # 1 & 2 plastics. By October 2009, students and the custodial staff have recycled 20,801 pounds of paper and cardboard, 1,377 pounds of plastic, and 124 pounds of aluminum!
